It's been called «the King Tut's tomb of silent-era cinema.» In 1978, bulldozers accidentally unearthed hundreds of long-lost silent films that had been buried in the frozen ground of Dawson City, Yukon. As in his earlier films such as DECASIA and THE MINERS' HYMNS, Bill Morrison ingeniously uses archival footage to explore the territory between history and poetry. Haunting, decay-filigreed fragments of the resurrected silent films form the link between parallel histories of early cinema (born of a highly flammable substance, cellulose nitrate) and Dawson City, a Gold Rush boomtown whose brief heyday attracted a remarkable assortment of adventurous souls, including authors Jack London and Robert Service, future film director (and unsolved murder victim) William Desmond Taylor, entrepreneurs Daniel and Solomon Guggenheim, movie theater magnates Sid Grauman and Alex Pantages, and brothel-owner Friedrich Trump, grandfather of the current President of the United States.
