A Brief History of Magick and the Occult: From the Ancient World to the Present Day
Ever wonder, as a modern Neopagan and practicing magician, where to start in terms of reading? Or where certain ideas came from or why they remain so prevalent today in the Neopagan movement? This is the class for you!
This 3-part workshop takes the attendee from ancient spiritworking in the Paleolithic era through magickal practices in the ancient and medieval world into the modern era and up through today. These workshops will cover the following: the animistic worldview of the ancient world, the rise of Neoplatonism and it's influence on the Western Magickal Tradition, the learned magick of the Middle Ages, including a brief overview of Astral Magick, Alchemy, and Grimoires, the Witchcraft Trials, the 19th century occult revival, and post-modern magick, including an assessment of modern Neopagan and occult groups. Attendees will come away with a better understanding of why we as modern Neopagans are where we are today, as well a beginning bibliography for starting your very own historico-magickal library.
Because this is a huge topic, it will be covered in 3 three-hour classes, of which this is the last one.
This class will cost $45 per session in advance, or $50 each at the door.
