Gary Chicago International Airport
6001 Industrial Hwy, Gary, Indiana 46406
For over 10 years the Gary-Chicago International Airport has been deporting immigrants every Friday morning primarily residents of Chicago, Northwest Indiana and the Milwaukee area. At about 10:30am a World Atlantic plane lands at the airport to pick up its human cargo. About the same time two white-painted buses with white window coverings pull into the gate, followed by some McHenry County sheriffs’ vans.
According to ICE, as of April 2017, 19,501 people have taken that flight that dumps them in Brownsville at the Mexican border. You can watch the shackled prisoners climbing the steps to the plan. The immigrants come from the Kankakee prison, gathered from the entire Chicago area, southern Wisconsin and Indiana.
Sister Joanne Persch has sat on those buses every Friday for 10 years praying with and talking to the detainees. She has yet to meet a violent criminal. The crime is almost always the same: wanting to stay with their families and crossing the border without documents.
In the near future will we also see young DACA residents in those planes?
On October 6, 2017 a broad coalition of organizations will come together as NWI Resist to protest these deportations at the Gary airport. With banners to DEFEND DACA and STOP DEPORTING OUR NEIGHBORS, we will gather at 10am in front of the main entrance to the airport on Airport Road. It is easily accessible from Cline Avenue, which connects to both the Skyway (toll road) and I-94.
It is urgent that we protest this use of the airport, these deportations, and the move to repeal DACA. Please join us.
