«Konchalovsky's latest masterwork...unforgettable.» — Nicholas Bell, IONCINEMA
“Robust, absorbing…enduringly resonant.” — Guy Lodge, Variety
Delusions and the forces of history close in on three individuals whose fates are linked in this metaphysically tinged tale that sifts the consequences of ambitions and dreams as the Holocaust changes the direction of their lives. Pierre (Philippe Duquesne), a venal police inspector, smug family man and Nazi collaborator; Olga (Vysotskaya), a coolly aristocratic fashion editor working for the French Resistance; and Helmut (Clauss), the glib, impressionable son of a noble German family, are each pulled into the fatal machinery of the Third Reich in the manner of karmic payback, in a segmented story of ambition, lust, and loss. Director Konchalovsky (RUNAWAY TRAIN, SIBERIADE) constricts his characters within an Academy-ratio frame and constructs a morally ambiguous world through the chiaroscuro cinematography of Alexander Simonov, only to spring a finale of startling spiritual clarity. In Russian, German, French, and Yiddish with English subtitles. DCP digital.
