Bold campaign finance reform is needed now more than ever. In recent years Illinois voters have witnessed historic levels of campaign contributions from dark money nonprofits, super PACS, and wealthy individuals. They have influenced elections at all levels of government in Illinois and have overshadowed the voices of ordinary citizens. Serious changes are needed at the city, county, and state levels to return political power to where it belongs.
That is why Our Revolution Illinois/Chicago supports Fair Elections legislation that creates small donor matching programs. Candidates who show a commitment to relying on small donations from their constituents and agree to refuse large donations would receive matching funds at a rate of 6:1. Fair Elections legislation increases political participation, empowers voters, and encourages new voices to run for office. This benefits those who are underrepresented in our current system, particularly people of color and working families.
Please join Our Revolution Illinois, Fair Elections Illinois, Democracy Initiative, Reclaim Chicago, 40th Ward Alliance, 39th Ward Dems, and Chicago Progress at a public forum to learn more about small donor matching and discuss how it can help fix our broken campaign finance system.
