Matt Mehlan is a Chicagoland native, artist, musician, and arts organizer. Currently based in Chicago, where he teaches at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, he lived and worked Brooklyn for 10 years, fronting the band Skeletons, the multimedia project Uumans, and running the record label Shinkoyo. He co-founded the original Silent Barn art space in NYC, and worked for nine years as Production Manager at the experimental music institution Roulette, where he produced concerts, managed the archive, and made documentaries about musicians and artists for Roulette TV.
Matt has performed around the world and released music on Shinkoyo, Ghostly International, Tomlab, Crammed Discs, The Social Registry, Sockets, Altin Village and Mine, among other labels. His debut solo album was released in October, 2017 — on Shinkoyo.
Katherine Young is a bassoonist and improviser, who amplifies her instrument and employs a flexible electronics set-up. Her debut solo album garnered praise in The Wire (“Bassoon colossus”) and Downbeat (“seriously bold leaps for the bassoon”). Collaboration is central to her practice, and she performs regularly with her long-standing ensembles Pretty Monsters, Architeuthis Walks on Land, and Till by Turning.
