Join Michael Deutsch, an attorney with People's Law Office and NLG Chicago, and activist Hatem Abudayyeh, the Executive Director of Arab American Action Network, for a conversation on the important roles that lawyers, law students, legal workers can play in supporting liberation movements. This workshop will focus on providing criminal defense in politicized cases, including working with supporters, joint defense, raising creative legal issues, and putting the government on trial.

Michael will share lessons he has learned through his decades-long experience representing people charged with crimes based on their political actions and associ...ations, including the Attica Brothers and members of the Black Liberation and Puerto Rican Independence Movements. Hatem will draw on his experiences working with both community organizers and attorneys to defend Palestinian Liberation and anti-war activists facing political repression both in the streets and in the courts.
Most recently, Hatem and Michael collaborated to pursue joint legal and organizing strategies to defend Rasmea Odeh, a Palestinian organizer targeted by the US government due to her previous imprisonment and torture by Israel.
This is the first event of an ongoing series of workshops provided by the Mass Defense Committee of of Chicago. Lawyers in attendance will earn 1.0 hours CLE credit.
