Beauty School’s PUSHOVER Album Release Party
with special guest She Speaks In Tongues

Tuesday, June 12

Chicago pop-rock band Beauty School returns to Steppenwolf to celebrate the release of their debut LP ‘Pushover.’ A culmination of material the group has crafted over the past three years, ‘Pushover’ pays tribute to the bittersweet love song, charting the highs and lows of love amid life's complexities. The album arrives at the threshold of summer, inviting you to submerge yourself in the sounds of the season.

Beauty School formed in Chicago in late 2015 when two groups of musicians joined forces to pursue their shared appreciation of sweet hooks, simple arrangements..., and pithy love songs. Since then, the group has honed an immediate and upbeat sound, driven by melodic female vocals and by an appreciation for the varied history of women in rock. Their EP, Ghost Beach, a day-dreamy elegy to summer, was released at a sold out show at Steppenwolf Theatre in fall of 2016.

Voted "Best Feminist Rock n' Roll Exorcism (Critics Picks)" for The Chicago Reader's Best of Chicago 2015 issue, she speaks in tongues is artist/vocalist Kate McCandless, who often lures with nostalgic blues, rock, and pop music references — simultaneously embracing and questioning their authority and comforts with a dark, feminist bent. Drawing upon her background in theatre and performance, and armed with a looping pedal, McCandless samples and channels many voices/spirits amidst an otherwise standard rock backdrop. The affect is jarring, haunting, and surprisingly listenable.
